iOS App Store Optimization

ASO Ranking Factors

App Store Optimization (ASO) is the ongoing optimization of your app's presence in the Apple App Store. The goal is more visibility in search, a higher conversion rate on the product page, and, in the long run, more organic downloads.

The 10 most important factors

#1

App Name (Title)

Very strong

The app name is the strongest textual ranking factor in the App Store. Apple allows up to 30 characters. Use them fully, but naturally:

  • Brand name + main keyword: Combine your brand name with the most important search term you want to rank for.
  • Avoid keyword stuffing: "Meditation Sleep Relaxation Yoga" looks unprofessional and lowers conversion.
  • Readability over algorithm: The title must be understandable and memorable for users.

Example: "Calm: Meditation & Sleep" instead of just "Calm".

Practical title hacks

  • Place the keyword within the first 20 characters: Search results often display only about 20–25 characters. Make sure your brand name and main keyword appear before any potential truncation.
  • The app name must appear in the title: Apple requires a clear relationship between the app and its title. A generic title like "Meditation" without a brand name can lead to rejection.
  • Use separators: Structures like "Brand - Keyword" or "Brand: Keyword" help both readers and the algorithm grasp the meaning.
  • Only one main keyword in the title: Additional terms belong in the subtitle (30 characters) or the keyword field (100 characters). Don't repeat words between the title, subtitle and keyword field.
  • Avoid pricing statements: Terms like "Free", "Sale" or "Limited Offer" in the title violate Apple's guidelines.
  • No third-party brands or generic single words: Titles like "Spotify for Meditation" or just "Weather" are usually rejected.
  • Skip "App" or "Mobile": Users are already searching in the App Store. Words like "MyBrand Mobile App" waste valuable characters.
  • A dedicated title per language: Every localization has its own 30-character limit. Tailor keywords specifically to local terms.

#2

Subtitle

Very strong

The subtitle appears below the app name and also has up to 30 characters. It's a relevant ranking factor and, at the same time, your second advertising line:

  • Place secondary keywords: Use terms that no longer fit in the title.
  • Communicate the benefit: Explain in one sentence what the app solves.
  • No repetition: Words already used in the title add little extra value in the subtitle.

Keywords field

Very strong

In App Store Connect you can store up to 100 characters of keywords. This field is invisible to users but very important for the algorithm:

  • Separate terms with commas: "meditation, sleep, relaxation" – spaces are optional, but commas are mandatory.
  • No repetitions: Words from the title and subtitle don't need to be repeated here.
  • Singular and plural: Apple often recognizes both forms automatically, but it's safer to cover both variants deliberately.
  • No other brands' names: This can lead to rejections.
  • Localize the field: Translate keywords for every store you serve.

App description

Medium

The description is primarily a conversion factor, not the strongest ranking factor. You have up to 4,000 characters available. Still, you should work keywords in deliberately and naturally, since they can be indexed by Apple:

  • The first three lines are crucial: Users initially see only the teaser text.
  • Structure with paragraphs and bullet points: Better readability increases dwell time.
  • Call to action at the end: "Download the app now for free."

#5

Screenshots & App Preview

Very strong

Screenshots are the most important visual conversion factor. Users scroll quickly – your first 1–3 screenshots decide whether someone installs:

  • Use text overlays: Explain the concrete benefit on each screenshot in 3–5 words.
  • Place your main keyword visibly: When users search for "sleep app" and read that word on a screenshot, perceived relevance increases.
  • Test different variants: A/B tests via App Store Connect Product Page Optimization.
  • App preview video: A short autoplay video on the detail page can significantly boost conversion.

#6

Ratings & reviews

Medium

Star ratings and the number of reviews influence both ranking and conversion:

  • Average rating: Apps with 4.5 stars or higher are installed more often.
  • Number of ratings: A high count signals trust and can indirectly strengthen ranking.
  • Ask regularly: Prompt satisfied users for a rating via in-app prompts – ideally after a positive experience.
  • Respond to reviews: Especially at 1–3 stars, responsiveness demonstrates quality.

Update frequency & app quality

Medium

Apple rewards well-maintained apps. Regular updates with release notes signal that the app is current and cared for:

  • Update at least every 4–8 weeks: Even minor bug fixes count.
  • Minimize crash rate: High crash rates negatively impact visibility.
  • Watch app size: Large apps download worse over cellular connections.

Conversion rate & download speed

Medium

Apple measures how many people who see your app actually install it after an impression. A high conversion rate confirms relevance:

  • Optimize icon, screenshots and title: These are the click drivers.
  • Test pricing: Freemium, paid or subscription – the right model influences installs.
  • Fast-loading detail page: Fewer drop-offs from long wait times.

#9

Localization

Medium

The German store, US store, UK store etc. are separate from each other. Full localization significantly increases your reach:

  • Translate title, subtitle and keywords: Not just the description.
  • Localize screenshots: Text in images should be in the local language.
  • Mind cultural differences: What works in Germany doesn't necessarily land the same way in the US.

Other influencing factors

Supporting
  • In-app purchase names: Indexed by Apple and can provide additional keywords.
  • Developer name: The developer's name can, in rare cases, carry minor relevance too.
  • Web referrals & backlinks: External links to the App Store page can increase visibility outside the store.
  • Feature requests & Apple editorial: A recommendation in the "Today" tab or as App of the Week brings enormous reach.

Best-practice workflow

Here's how to proceed step by step to systematically improve your app's presence.

  1. 1Research: Find relevant keywords with sufficient volume and realistic difficulty.
  2. 2Title & subtitle: Place the main keyword in the title, secondary keywords in the subtitle.
  3. 3Keywords field: Fill all 100 characters meaningfully and without repetition.
  4. 4Description: Write user-focused copy, weaving in keywords naturally.
  5. 5Screenshots: Create 3–5 strong images with clear value propositions.
  6. 6Ratings: Actively request positive reviews and respond to criticism.
  7. 7Test & iterate: Track rankings daily, test variants, and adapt.
